<< back to Faculty PhD, University of California-Berkeley, 2005 A native of Lima, Perú, Professor Reyna’s teaching and research interests includes colonial Spanish American literature, Andean literature, historiography and culture. He is involved in a book length project that examines the different narratives and interpretations of the famous “dialogue of Cajamarca” that took place between the Inca Atahualpa and Fray Vicente de Valverde previous to the capture of the Inca by the Spaniards conquerors. The “Cajamarca Encounter”, as many like to name this event, is a well known point of departure in the historiography of the region. Professor Reyna draws on materials from the early colonial period up to more contemporary texts in order to explore the evolution of the narrative and interpretation of the Cajamarca encounter and the repercussion that the evolution of both have had in the construction of national identities in the region. Professor Reyna teaches a variety of classes, including a capstone on Andean Literature and Culture, Literature and Politics, Latin American Civilization, introductory classes on Hispanic Literatures as well as Writing Intensive classes. He is also co-chair of the Faculty and Graduate Students Seminar Series. Professor Reyna is also a devoted hincha (fan) of football (soccer) and an ardent follower of his beloved team Alianza Lima. Professor Reyna also co-chairs the department's Faculty and Graduate Student Seminar Series.
