Twentieth Century and Contemporary French Literature, French Orientalism, Literature and Science, Languages Across the Curriculum
Dr. Wang joined MU in January 2013. She received a Ph.D. from University of Colorado with a dissertation on Marcel Proust, A la recherche du temps perdu: la métafiction de la métaphore. Her dissertation examines different aspects of self-reflexivity in the Recherche. Beyond linguistic and narrative self-awareness, her work explores the relationship between the Proustian metaphor and the Modernist conception of the “Work of Art”. This research helps to situate Proust between Modernism and Postmodernism, and to redefine metaphor by establishing a link between its literary and philosophical dimensions.
At the University of Colorado, Dr. Wang taught intermediate and advanced French Culture and Composition, A Survey of French Literature from the Middle-Ages to the 18th Century, Dada and Surrealism (cross-listed between Humanities and German). She served as a member on an Honors thesis committee for the Department of Art History. Before going to CU, Dr. Wang obtained a MA from Purdue University, majoring in Francophone Literature.
Born and raised in the People’s Republic of China, Dr.Wang came to the United-States for graduate studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She holds a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Purdue University, and worked for the USDA as a Research Associate prior to her literary studies. At Purdue University, she taught Human Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics, and Biochemistry.
Her diverse academic and cultural experiences reflect her deep interest in the complex relationship between the self and the other, literature and science, languages and the disciplines. She teaches intermediate and advanced French Conversation and Composition, Science as Reflected in French Literature, a topic course cross-listed with Honors College. She is also assisting the Provost in developing the Languages Across the Curriculum (LAC) initiative.
