A renowned critic of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Caribbean literatures and cultures, Dr. Cuervo Hewitt is author of Voices Out of Africa in Twentieth-Century Spanish CaribbeanLiterature (Bucknell UP: 2009). Her lecture examines the transatlantic networks between Cuban anthropologist Lydia Cabrera and French Africanist scholars Pierre Verger and Roger Bastide, the topic of her forthcoming book, Becoming Iyaré Yemayá: Lydia Cabrera’s Writings and Her Contemporaries.
