Welcome to the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures!
Our department includes four languages: French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.
- a major and minor in French and Spanish
- a minor in Italian and Portuguese
- a Ph.D. in Romance Languages with an emphasis in French or Spanish
Our student body is very diverse; students from various parts of the United States and the world come and study with us. Consequently, our faculty is also very diverse, reflecting the multiplicity of backgrounds and interests of the students whom we serve.
We study foreign languages, cultures, and literatures to have an increased understanding of the global community and all of its people. In many ways, to study a foreign language is to study the resiliency, creativity, beauty, and genius of the human spirit.
The following quotes best encapsulate why foreign languages matter:
"A different language is a different vision of life." - Federico Fellini, Italian film director
"No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive." - Mohandas K. Gandhi
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to
him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” - Nelson Mandela
Come and discover the world with us!
